Electron microscopy is often the gold standard for imaging materials from the atomic scale to the mesoscale. Recent advancements in electron microscopy instrumentation, image processing and correlative techniques are pushing the field forward in exciting leaps and bounds. The Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM), a national CFI Major Science Initiatives facility is located on the grounds of McMaster University, has recently started a new phase in its instrumentation and growth, which will enable materials innovations at a new level.
In this seminar, I will provide an overview of key research priority themes of the CCEM including in-situ microscopy, correlative microscopy, image processing and ultra-high resolution EELS. These themes will be reinforced by vignettes from the Bassim research group’s projects, from 2-D materials to semiconductors to metallurgy to biomaterials.
Bio:
Dr. Nabil Bassim is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Prior to his arrival at McMaster in 2016, he was a Materials Research Engineer at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, where he arrived as a postdoc in 2003. He hold a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Florida and graduated magna cum laude (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of South Florida in 1997. Dr. Bassim’s research focuses on advanced ion and electron microscopy techniques for a wide variety of applications. Since 2019, he has served as the Scientific Director of the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy.
